Af the King, a.k.a. Africa started becoming serious about music and entertaining in his freshman year in college.While attending the Fashion Institute of Technology, he quickly earned his own radio show on the college station. The official format was "new"wave music but he fought to maintain a hip hop format for his time slot.Sunday nights after the last show had aired, he would teach himself how to blend beats in time.AF quickly began constructing personal mix tapes gradually gaining appreciation for some of the "new" music on the station's regular format. Artists like: U2, Shriekback, Inxs, Simple Minds and Depeche Mode. His musical taste expanded. He began to combine some of these songs with Hip Hop instrumentals and old school beats like Bambataa's"Looking For The Perfect Beat".Fast forward two years later, AF started a group called African Nemesis, with fellow rapper LoPro. Socially conscious content over tracks combining unusual samples. Influenced by his love for instrumental jazz, AF began creating original bass lines, melodies and beats. It was during the next 4 years he honed his craft for listening to and creating new intricacies in his music. Then African Nemesis dissolved. Faced with the question of how to best relay his observations of the human condition, AF decided to go solo. Fast forward to the present. After hooking up with multi-platinum engineers / producers Roey Shamir and Angela Piva, owners of INFX Productions, AF's idea to sample original music played on live instruments was taken a step further. Angela and Roey suggested trying an all out live band format. AF stated "as long as we can make it pump with the force of hard core hip hop" he was game. AF the King combines poetically explored social themes, an urban savvy rhyme flow and a weathered sensitivity to the joy and pain of everyday life. His consistently striking vocals string together the various musical motifs. You're not tripping when you hear hip hop beats boiling under jazz fusion influenced bass lines on one track and then Zeppelin-esque guitar phrases and turntable acrobatics on another. But hold up! Is that a hip hop slow joint with lyrics that touched your soul? Diversity,that's the meaning of Eclectic Hip Hop. This is a big, big world we live in.
